Fruit machines don’t get any more frustrating or less rewarding than this one! Chavin’ It Large pub fruit machine is a reel shocker.
We are so used to UK style fruit machines being great fun as well as having lots of bonus playing features to keep our interest. Take it from The Chipster, this AWP machine from Microgaming is as far removed from an enjoyable fruit machine playing experience as it possibly can be.
The only sound effect to accompany your rare reel wins is a brain-scrapingly annoying female mockney voice shouting words of encouragement like, “Go on, bruv!” and “Quali’ee!” and most annoyingly of all, “Well Phat!”.
I swear to you, within five minutes, you’ll be wanting to join the queue to gag her with her Burberry cap and slap her about the face with a couple of jellied eels. Harsh? Try it and tell me I’m wrong!
Even the usual puns that appear as you spin the reels are distinctly lacking in humour:
 
 
Just more of the mockney wench’s one-liners! Aaarrrgghh! So, we’ve all now turned the sound off and increased the ambience considerably. Unfortunately, this fruit machine can’t even redeem itself with great gameplay and features. It is completely devoid of both.
The symbols on the reels are so limited: a gold sovereign ring, a Burberry cap and three different coloured trainers. That’s it. You get 2x your stake for three Sov’s on the winline and 4x your stake for three Burberry caps.
Then 8x, 10x, 16x and 100x your stake for different coloured trainer combinations. This is where Chavin It Large fruit machine really trips over itself. Three trainers on the winline happens so infrequently that I cannot see how you would ever come away on top.
If you’re lucky, you might get 8x your stake back every 100 to 200 spins! This is only my experience with this pub fruit machine but it gets worse. To access the feature screen, you not only have to line up three trainers, but you have to do it three times in consecutive spins!!
Just for you, dear readers, I persevered for hours with this fruit machine until I had achieved the impossible.
At £5 a spin, I was £2,500 in the hole when the feature landed and look at the maximum prize on offer - 250x your stake - which I duly won (slowish skill shot style feature). So I recovered £1,250, only half of what it had cost me to get there. Brainless.
I have to say that my experience might not be representative and others might have more luck but I did play this fruit machine literally for hours on your behalf.
Chavin It Large gives UK pub fruit machines a bad name. The lack of features and the infrequency with which they are awarded is a format that should never be repeated. I would love to hear from any of you that have had a better time with this online fruit machine.
